Gluten Free Fish and Chips

I love fish and chips. As a celiac, fried foods are not something I get often. I hadn’t really thought about making gluten free fish and chips until I started working on my batter for my gluten free fried cheesecake (which is amazing, by the way). It was so light and crispy, it kinda reminded me of the gluten free fish and chips I got at Ragland Road in Disney Springs. I knew I had to try it!gluten free fish and chips with gluten free tempura batter

Best Deal Ever!

Luckily, I had on hand a couple packages of already cut up mahi-mahi┬áthat would be perfect to try it out. Many people don’t realize this, but when fish is cut into filets there are often pieces left over that aren’t the right size or shape. If you’re lucky you can find them at a super good price.

Trader Joes often sells wild caught Mahi Mahi and Cod pieces at a fraction of what you would pay for fillets. They are like 3.99ish a pound at the Trader Joes here. It may not always be in stock, but when they are, I stock up. The pieces are perfect for gluten free fried fish, fish tacos, cook and put on salads, whatever you like!

Of course, you don’t want to forget the dipping sauce! Remember the Lemon Dill Sauce I posted about last week? This is just one of the recipes I used it for. It is to die for with these gluten free fish and chips! Make sure to make plenty to go around!

Recipe Notes

    • Keep your tempura batter ingredients cold and use fresh club soda that still has the fizz left.
    • Season your fish before battering, it is impossible to season after.
    • I use GF Jules flour. It’s my favorite and it always works, no matter what I’m doing. You can buy it directly from her site, or now on Amazon!
    • Use whatever “chips” you like. If you are using whole potatoes and frying them like I did (might as well- you already have the oil heated), I microwave mine first for a few minutes, that way I don’t burn them when I’m frying.
    • Get a spider. It’s this kinda flat, wirey spoon. They are 6.00 on Amazon, you can also find them at the grocery store. They are a must for frying foods!

Have you ever had gluten free fish and chips? Do you like yours with a traditional tartar or do you like to go out of the box a bit with new sauces?

  1. Fish & Chips are my favorite!! The only problem is that I have to be so careful of where I order it because a lot of places over oil them! So then the alternative would be to learn to make them at home. I think with your steps I can absolutely do this. Thanks for the recipe.
