A Gluten Free Thanksgiving

Holidays and Celiac Disease are a difficult combination. There are so many things to think about in regards to ingredients and cross contamination. One of the best ways to make sure that you have safe food if you are attending Thanksgiving somewhere else is to bring something you know you can eat to share with everyone. Last year I wrote a post with  few Thanksgiving Tips, you can read it HERE, but I’d like to recap a few very important points:

  1. Turkey is naturally gluten free, a turkey stuffed with stuffing is not.
  2. Don’t be afraid to bring your own food or eat ahead of time. Thanksgiving is about spending time with friends and family, not the food you can or cannot eat.
  3. If you do have a selection of gluten free options, lucky you! Be sure to grab your plate first so that you don’t risk cross contamination.
  4. Watch out for those serving utensils. Consider labeling them or putting the gluten free items in a separate space.

Taking a gluten free side dish (or forwarding this list on to your host!) is a great way to ensure that there is safe food for you to eat. The roasted butternut squash looks delicious (minus the walnuts for our family). It’s a side you could really make anytime in the fall season.
