Teal Pumpkin Project

I hate seeing kids left out, especially when it is so simple to include them. There will always be times when you have Celiac Disease or other food allergies that you won’t be able to participate in activities, but if you have it in your power to include everyone, then why not do it!

Have you heard of the Teal Pumpkin Project? It is a fantastic movement that takes into account children with allergies and food sensitivities during Halloween when candy treats are typically passed out. When you see a teal pumpkin outside a door, it means that they have treats that are safe for kids with food allergies. Often this means items like stickers and spider rings, but sometimes great companies produce candies that are perfect for children with allergies.

Using Enjoy Life’s new Baking Chip Snack Bags, I created these fun gluten free treats. Since Enjoy Life goes the extra mile to make their products allergen friendly, I wanted to go the extra mile to make these gluten free treats allergen friendly as well.

Gluten Free Treats for Everyone

gluten free treatsIf you have Celiac Disease, you understand how difficult it can be to participate in “normal” activities. One of the best things about Enjoy Life Baking Chips Snack Packs is that they are not only gluten free, but Allergen Friendly. When I decided to make these adorable activity bags, I didn’t want to just make them gluten free. I wanted to make them as allergen friendly as possible.

These kits are a super fun activity for a Halloween or Harvest party, or just to pass out for kids to do at home. They make great little gifts or party favors. So simple, but they turn out adorable!

How to Make Crispy Treat Pumpkin Bags

  1. gluten free treatsPlace one Pumpkin Crispy Treat, one Enjoy Life Snack Pack and one bag of icing in each goodie bag.
  2. To decorate, just cut the corner of the icing and squeeze onto pumpkin. Decorate with Enjoy Life Baking Chips!
  3. Pass out for kids to enjoy!

In order to make them Allergen Friendly I made a few adjustments to my usual recipes.

Recipe Notes:

Butter: Earth Balance makes great vegan, dairy free buttery sticks.gluten free treats

Crispy Rice: I used Nature’s Path Crispy Brown Rice.

Marshmallows: Dandies Marshmallows are gluten free, corn free, and vegan (they do contain soy, so if this is an issue, please look for another variety!) Regular marshmallows do not contain soy, but are made with corn syrup.

Chocolate Chips: Enjoy Life mini chips are top 8 free and made without corn.

Powdered Sugar: I used Wholesome Brand Corn Free Powdered Sugar. I have heard that Trader Joes also makes a corn-free powdered sugar, but I have not tried it.

    • You’re right! Regular marshmallows (like Kraft) are, but Dandies have soy. I used them because I needed something corn free. I edited the marshmallow info!

    • It was a lot of trial and error and horrible for you food coloring…The Earth Balance sticks make the icing yellowish to start with, but it was a lot of playing around. I’m working on trying out all natural food colorings for Christmas posts!

  1. This is such a great idea. My next door neighbor’s child doesn’t eat chocolate – so I always buy something specifically for him. My daughter has a peanut allergy – so my husband and I always got her snickers and peanut m&ms. We weren’t allowed to TOUCH anything that didn’t have peanuts!

  2. Love the sound of the Teal Pumpkin Project – that must be so amazing for parents to gf kids to know right away that a house will be handing out gf treats! I frequently buy the Enjoy life chocolate chips for my baking needs!
