Traditional Peruvian

Peruvian food is one of my favorite cuisines (and not just because my hubby is Peruvian!). I love all the flavors and the fusion of cultures. Many people don’t realize it, but Peru has large Japanese and Chinese populations, as well as people of Spanish descent and those indigenous to Peru. All these people groups come together to create some amazing dishes!

I’m lucky enough to be married to my amazing Peruvian-Japanese husband who picked up some amazing cooking skills from his father, who was a chef in Peru. When you see a Peruvian recipe on My Gluten Free Miami, it is straight from Peru! Luckily, most Peruvian food has been really simple to make gluten free.

Peruvian Food doesn’t get much better than Lomo Saltado. The perfect fusion of Chinese and traditional Peruvian flavors. It has the best of everything. Steak, onions, tomatoes, and peppers all served over French Fries with a side of rice. The flavors of this dish are outstanding, plus it is simple to make. One pan and ready in under 30 minutes.

The heat comes from jarred aji amarillo peppers, but if you don’t have access to them, you could add a little bit of aji amarillo paste, extra black pepper or jalepeno. If you don’t like things a little spicy, just leave it out.

For the Lomo Saltado we used steak we received in this months Butcher Box and they were fabulous. I was eating the steak out of the dish (I left all the onions and tomatoes for my husband!). Even my daughter was chowing down on the steak.

  • 1 teaspoon garlic
  • 1 Tablespoon red wine vinegar
  • 2 Tablespoons tamari (gluten free soy sauce)
  • 2 Aji Amarillo Peppers, sliced into thin strips
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 1 medium sized tomato, cut into 8 chunks
  • 12 ounce steak cut into strips (such as sirloin or ribeye)
  • salt & pepper
  • 1 bag gluten free steak fries cooked according to package instructions
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • Cilantro for garnish

  1. Add tablespoon oil to pan
  2. Salt and pepper steak
  3. Brown quickly over medium heat.
  4. Remove steak and juices from pan set aside.
  5. Wipe clean with paper towel.
  6. Add tablespoon oil.
  7. Add garlic, onions toast for 2-3 minutes.
  8. Add tomatoes, cook for 2-3 minutes.
  9. Add Tamari (gluten free soy sauce) and red wine vinegar. Stir to combine.
  10. Add back steak, stir to combine.
  11. Serve over french fries with a side of rice.
  12. Garnish with cilantro.

  1. YUM! This looks really good and I easy to make. Can’t wait to try it. There’s a lot of start h though. So I’ll have to choose between the fries and the rice.
