Confession Time

I have never been trick or treating. Never. Growing up we went to a lot of harvest festivals at church, and always had a great time, but I have never experienced knocking on doors and handing out candy. I’ve never handed out candy either. I used to buy a bag but never lived in a neighborhood where kids went door to door.

But now my daughter has started Day Care and she has school on Halloween. I’m not planning to take her trick or treating, but I wanted to do something special for her class. As always, the first thing I think about is, “Does anyone have food allergies?”  I created these great little pumpkins full of non-food toys and a few treats that are allergy friendly and made without artificial flavors.

Tips for Choosing Allergy Safe Treats for Trick or Treating

When it comes to holidays, we always want to be as inclusive as possible. These are just a few tips to help when choosing allergy safe treats:

  1.  Avoid items like play dough (may contain wheat) and items made of latex.
  2. There are several candies out there that are Top 8 Free, including Enjoy Life Mini Chips (You can see my DIY post using Enjoy Life Mini Chips HERE!) and Yum Earth Gummies. Keep packages on hand for parents to view.
  3. Give options. Have non-food treats and candy treats available. The Teal Pumpkin Project has some great ideas for treats, as well as signs you can download to let children know that your house has allergy friendly options.

Pumpkin Gift Bags

For my daughter’s class, I found these cute little pumpkin boxes at Michael’s. (Michael’s tip- Always use a coupon! They will take them from your phone!) and picked up some little trinkets at Target. I love Micheal’s and Target (not getting paid to say this!) and I am lucky enough to have them in the same building.

  1. Foozy balls
  2. Rubber (non-latex) bracelets
  3. Spider Rings
  4. Spider Erasers
  5. Yum Earth Lollipop
  6. Yum Earth Gummy Bears and Worms.

They fit in the little boxes perfectly and I know the kids in Day Care are going to be thrilled to get a little gift, plus the parents are going to be thrilled that the candy isn’t full of artificial stuff. It’s also a very limited amount of candy.

Great ideas! I always like to add in some other options with the traditional candy, I’ve noticed even kids without allergies like getting something different!

That’s crazy that you’ve never been involved in the trick or treating process! Honestly though, I don’t think you missed too much. This looks like a much more fun way to get goodies!
